Trouw Nutrition to Close Ship Street Factory with Loss of 29 Jobs

The Trouw Nutrition production facility on Ship Street is set to close this September, affecting 29 local workers. While manufacturing moves overseas, the company will maintain its presence in Belfast through its Clarendon Dock offices.

The North Belfast community is facing a blow as Trouw Nutrition has confirmed it will close its production facility on Ship Street by September 30. The closure will result in the loss of 29 jobs at the plant, which has long been a fixture in the local industrial landscape, producing vital livestock feed for farms across Northern Ireland.

While the factory side of the business is winding down, Trouw Nutrition has clarified that its office-based operations will remain in the city. The commercial, sales, technical support, and customer relationship teams located at Clarendon Dock are not affected by this decision and will continue to operate as usual.

Future product supply for local farmers will be managed through the company’s European network, including sites in Great Britain and the Netherlands. To support local distribution, they are also expanding their partnership with Newtownards-based North Down Grain.

Pieter Bastiaanssen, Managing Director of Trouw Nutrition Europe and Central Asia, expressed regret over the impact on local staff, noting that the decision was a necessary step to address structural challenges. He reaffirmed the company's commitment to the Northern Ireland market, stating that targeted investments are being made to ensure a smooth transition for their customers across the island.
