A major £350,000 carriageway resurfacing project is scheduled to begin across key routes in North Belfast on Sunday, 18 October 2026. The substantial infrastructure scheme will improve a 100-metre stretch extending from Brougham Street through the Dock Street junction towards Garmoyle Street, alongside a 150-metre section of the A2 York Street from the entrance of Cityside Shopping Complex to the Dock Street junction.
Highlighting the importance of the project, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said: “This substantial investment of £350,000 for North Belfast will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users who travel through this area and demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
To keep disruption to a minimum for everyday traffic, the Department has scheduled the works to take place primarily overnight. However, motorists and local residents should prepare for a series of planned closures throughout the project.
The overnight schedule begins from 9pm on Sunday, 18 October until 6am on Monday, 19 October, during which York Street will be closed citybound, Brougham Street will be closed towards Dock Street, and Dock Street will be closed in full. York Street will also close countrybound starting from 11pm that night.
On Monday, 19 October, countrybound lane closures will be in place on York Street beside Cityside Shopping Centre between 9pm and 11pm, followed by a full closure of this section and Brougham Street until 6am on Tuesday, 20 October. From 9pm on Tuesday, 20 October until 6am on Wednesday, 21 October, York Street will close citybound and Dock Street will also be closed.
From 9pm on Wednesday, 21 October until 6am on Thursday, 22 October, closures will again affect citybound York Street, Brougham Street towards Dock Street, and all of Dock Street, with York Street closing countrybound from 11pm. On Thursday, 22 October, lane closures will be implemented countrybound on York Street beside Cityside between 9pm and 11pm, before a full closure of this section and Brougham Street takes effect until 6am on Friday, 23 October. Over the weekend, from 9pm on Saturday, 24 October until 11am on Sunday, 25 October, York Street will be closed citybound and Dock Street will be closed.
Alongside the scheduled overnight closures, off-peak lane closures will be introduced as necessary on both Dock Street and York Street during the daytime. Clearly signed diversion routes will guide road users, and local access will be maintained where possible. Commuters and local residents are advised to allow extra travel time, follow all temporary traffic directions, and take extra care when travelling near the work zones. The entire scheme is expected to be finished by Friday, 30 October 2026.
