£557K York Street Resurfacing Scheme to Bring Weekend Road Closures

Local residents and motorists across North Belfast are being advised to prepare for upcoming travel disruption, as a £557,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme gets underway on the A2 York Street. Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announced the substantial investment, highlighting that the upgrade will deliver significant long-term benefits for the local community and everyone who travels through the area.

The resurfacing project will span an 800-metre stretch of York Street, extending from the Brougham Street junction to just beyond the Limestone Road junction. Work is scheduled to begin on Friday, September 18, and is anticipated to be completed by Friday, October 16, subject to favourable weather conditions.

To allow the works to proceed safely and smoothly, full road closures will be implemented across four consecutive weekends:

• From 9:00pm on Friday, September 18 until 6:00pm on Sunday, September 20

• From 6:00am on Saturday, September 26 until 6:00pm on Sunday, September 27

• From 9:00pm on Friday, October 2 until 6:00pm on Sunday, October 4

• From 6:00am on Saturday, October 10 until 6:00pm on Sunday, October 11

In addition to these full weekend closures, continuous lane closures will be in place along York Street throughout the duration of the project, starting on Monday, September 21. During the weekend closure periods, a signposted diversion route will guide traffic via Brougham Street and North Queen Street.

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has confirmed that traffic management measures are designed to keep inconvenience to a minimum while accommodating local access. Nonetheless, some delays are expected, and road users are encouraged to plan journeys in advance, leave extra travel time, comply with temporary restrictions, and take extra care when driving near the works. DfI will provide updates should there be any adjustments to the schedule.
